Combivir (generic name: Lamivudine/Zidovudine) is used, alone or with other medicines, to slow down the progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It slows production of the virus and in this way stops ongoing damage to the body's immune system, which fights infection.
Combivir contains both lamivudine and zidovudine which belong to a group of medicines called antiretrovirals. Both of these medicines are nucleoside analogues that work together to slow the growth of HIV by blocking an enzyme needed by the virus to reproduce.
Combivir is non-addictive.
